Research impact services

Since 2012, I have worked with over 35 universities and research institutes in the UK and Hong Kong, providing a wide range of closely tailored impact-related services to institutions, faculties and individual academic researchers.

All my services in this area are offered via the excellent specialist agency, Bulletin Academic. You can visit their website to find out more.

At the moment, the following services are most in demand:

REF2029 training and support:

Impact case study development:

For UoA groups or individual researchers who want regular support as they develop their impact case studies for the REF2029. Sessions take the form of detailed structured feedback and action planning and will be tailored to your requirements.

Research impact for the REF and beyond:

A highly practical introduction to research impact and the role it plays in the REF and grant applications, this workshop provides plenty of opportunity for participants to work on their own impact.

Good writing for impact case studies:

Workshop for researchers and support staff tasked with writing an impact case study for the REF for the first time, and those wanting a refresher.

Towards an impact strategy:

A workshop for senior academics and those in leadership roles who want to develop a clearly defined  impact strategy for their UoA, school or faculty.

Evidence gathering: masterclass

No impact case study is viable without the right impact evidence. This masterclass takes the angst out of collecting that evidence and weaving it into the case study narrative in the most effective way.

Strategy, People and Research Environment support:

For those tasked with writing the institutional or UoA SPRE element of the REF. Available as a workshop or individual support sessions, depending on your individual needs.

General impact workshops and support services:

Understanding policy:

A short introduction to what policymakers want out of academic researchers, how to engage them  and how to present your research findings to them in the right way.

Effective briefs for policymakers:

A hands-on writing workshop that provides the tools and know-how for producing policy briefs that will stand out and work for busy policymakers.

Making your mark: impact through media interviews

This workshop will be run by two experienced journalists (myself included) and provides a practical introduction to being interviewed on radio and TV. The session can be offered for women only or any other groups who want a safe space to learn and practice.

Research impact for the REF and beyond:

A highly practical introduction to research impact and the role it plays in the REF and grant applications, this workshop can be tailored to ECRs and provides plenty of opportunity for participants to work on their own impact.
